Sudan’s Refugee Commission has confirmed that hundreds of Ethiopian peacekeepers have requested asylum in the country.
The request comes after more than 500 UN peacekeepers that were deployed in the disputed Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan asked Khartoum for asylum.
The peacekeepers cited fears for their safety if they were to return home.
An official of the commission revealed on Sunday that some 40 former peacekeepers hailing from Ethiopia’s war-wracked Tigray region arrived Sunday in eastern Sudan after seeking asylum.
“Arrivals of the asylum seekers will continue daily until they are all moved,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The ex-peacekeepers who arrived on Sunday were taken to the Um Gargour refugee camp in eastern Sudan.
The Tigray Region is the northernmost regional state in Ethiopia. The Region is the homeland of the Tigrayan, Irob and Kunama people. Formerly known as Region 1, its capital and largest city is Mekelle. Tigray is the fifth-largest by area, the fifth-most populous, and the fifth-most densely populated of the 11 regional states in Ethiopia. 96 per cent of Tigrayans are Orthodox Christian.
A report by the United Nations Refugee Agency says the number of Ethiopian refugees streaming into eastern Sudan has now surpassed 40,000 since the crisis began, with more than 5,000 women, children and men fleeing the ongoing fighting in the Tigray region over the weekend.
