A new superstar in the WWE was born on Tuesday when Nigerian Oba Femi announced himself in the NXT by defeating Dragon Lee to become the new North American Champion.
The Lagos-born Oba Femi had stunned the wrestling world when he defeated Riley Osborne in the semi-finals of the latest annual NXT Men’s Breakout Tournament in the special New Year’s Evil episode of WWE NXT on the USA Network.
According to the WWE, the bout saw Oba Femi dominate nearly from beginning to end, with Osborne only getting one offensive flurry near the end of the bout.
And with the win, Oba Femi has earned himself a contract for a guaranteed future NXT World Championship opportunity.
“Oba Femi’s ascent to championship glory has been nothing short of meteoric, signaling the arrival of a formidable force in the world of professional wrestling,” WWE wrote on its website.
“Femi’s journey to the North American Championship is remarkable, having cashed in his NXT Breakout Contract to seize the opportunity on Tuesday, January 9. The future is now!”
“The pivotal moment occurred on the heels of Lee’s successful title defense against Lexis King, adding an extra layer of intensity and anticipation to the match that followed.”
“Femi’s victory was not just a stroke of luck but the 22-year-old grabbed his opportunity with both hands.
“Femi seized the moment on Tuesday night and scored the pinfall victory over Dragon Lee, solidifying his claim to the NXT North American Championship, after he rendered a Last Ride powerbomb on Dragon Lee, signaling the end of Dragon Lee’s reign and the beginning of Oba Femi’s championship era.”
“This title win is particularly impressive when considering Femi’s relatively brief wrestling career, with only 21 matches to his name according to the online wrestling database Cagematch,” it said.
