A former head of the South African intelligence agency, Arthur Fraser, has accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of “kidnapping and bribing robbers who stole millions of dollars from one of his properties” in a bid to “conceal the crime from the South African police service and the South African revenue service.”
Fraser who filed a legal complaint against Ramaphosa on Wednesday, said he had ample evidence to prove his accusations of criminal charges.
“I have taken the unprecedented step to lay criminal charges against his excellency, the president of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa,” the former spy chief said in a statement.
According to Fraser in the filing, on February 9, 2020, burglars broke into a farm belonging to Ramaphosa in the north ofJohannesburg with the help of a domestic worker, where they found and stole more than $4 million.
“The President concealed the crime from the South African police service and/or South African revenue service and thereafter paid the culprits for their silence,” he said.
Fraser also accused the president of organising the “kidnapping of the suspects, their interrogation on his property, and bribery,“ the filing said.
Fraser’s lawyer, Eric Mabuza, who confirmed the action of the former intelligence officer, said he had filed the legal complaint at a police station in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
