The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has revealed that Nigeria’s crude oil production rose to 1.418mbpd in December 2023.
Nigeria’s crude oil output grew by 100mb/d from 1.319mbpd in November, according to secondary sources cited by OPEC in its Monthly Oil Market Report for January 2024.
According to direct communication, OPEC revealed in the report that was made public on Wednesday that the country’s oil production in December was 1.335 million barrels, compared to 1.250 million barrels in November.
The report shows that during the time under consideration, oil output decreased in OPEC nations such as Algeria, Congo, Iran, Libya, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
“According to secondary sources, total OPEC-12 crude oil production averaged 26.70 mb/d in December 2023, higher by 73 tb/d, month-on-month. Crude oil output increased mainly in Nigeria and Iraq, while production in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and IR Iran decreased,” the report said.
Despite incidents of oil theft and illicit refining in the Niger Delta, Nigeria’s oil production has increased. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced in December that it intended to produce two million barrels of crude oil per day by 2024.
According to NNPCL, this would greatly increase the 1.67 million barrels of oil and condensate it claimed to be producing at the time, allowing Nigeria to reach the OPEC target of 2 million barrels per day.
The NNPCL Board Chairperson, Mr. Pius Akinyelure, acknowledged that in order to reach this goal, Nigeria’s security architecture would need to be completely redesigned in order to handle issues like pipeline vandalism, and defeat tactics used in oil theft.
There have been recent controversies around Africa’s membership of OPEC. Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo both reaffirmed their commitment to the body, while Angola, another top oil producer on the continent, left over a disagreement on production quotas following the oil cartel’s decision last month to further slash output next year.
