WWC: ‘Win for Africa’, CAF President urges Nigeria, Morocco and South Africa

Published

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has called on the trio of Nigeria, South Africa and Morocco to win their round of 16 matches at the ongoing Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand for the continent.

Motsepe, who expressed delight at the qualification of the three teams—the first time three teams from Africa will achieve such feat—sent congratulatory messages to the teams and urged them to invoke the African spirit when they took on their opponents.

“CAF and the 54 African nations that are members of CAF congratulates the Women’s Teams of Nigeria, Morocco and South Africa for their historic and well-deserved qualification to the Round of 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023,” Mostepe said in the congratulatory messages.

“The Super Falcons, the Atlas Lionesses and Banyana Banyana have made the people of Nigeria, Morocco and South Africa, as well as the people of the rest of the African continent, very proud with their outstanding performances and hard-earned victories at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.

“The future of Women’s football on the African Continent is bright.

“The victories and successes of the Nigerian, Moroccan and South African women’s teams will contribute significantly to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa.

“CAF wishes the Nigerian, Moroccan and South African women’s football teams everything of the best for their upcoming matches,” he said.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria advanced from Group B after finishing second with five points without losing a single game in the group stage.

Morocco, who are debutants at the women Mundial, pulled the greatest shock by qualifying from Group H which had Colombia, Korea, and Germany, finishing second behind Colombia which they defeated 1-0 in their final game.

South Africa also qualified for the second round for the first time as they finished second in Group G, finishing with four points.

While Nigeria will play England, South Africa will lock horns with the Netherlands, with Morocco taking on Spain.

Botswanan Tebogo hits at Kenyan Omanyala over claims of being African sprint king

Published

Botswanan sprint sensation,
Letsile Tebogo, has hit back at Kenyan 100m champion, Ferdinand Omanyala, over claims that he is the king of African sprint.

Omanyala, in an Track and Field network in April, had laid claims to being the true king of Africa in sprints having risen to prominence in 2021 when he set the record as the fastest man in the continent when he ran 9.77 at the 3rd edition of the Absa Kip Keino classic.

The following year, Omanyala won the 2022 African title in Mauritius, as well as the 100m gold at the Commonwealth Games, feats he believes bestows on him the title of Africa’s king of the sprint.

Though it has not been all rosy for the 28-year-old Omanyala as he has faltered at some big stages having failed to make the final of the Olympic games in Tokyo in 2021 and finished a disappointing seventh at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last year, he still believes he is head and shoulders above other African stars.

On the other hand, 20-year-old Tebogo has already scored medals in both the 100 and 200m races at the highest stage, which has given him the right to question Omanyala’s claims

“I do not have anything to say. Everything will reveal itself as time goes on,” Tebogo said in an interview with the same Track and Field network on Tuesday.

“To me, it does not make sense if you are the African champion, but where it mattered the most, he could not step in,” he added.

Tebogo who has proven his mettle in the 200m which he claims is the easiest race to compete in, believes it should also be used as a gauge to test the fastest men in the continent apart from just the 100m.

“The 100 is very tactical. Any day can be your day. I believe we should include both races,” he added.
