Late Kelvin Kiptum’s alleged ‘baby mama’ opens up on secret affair

Published

A 22-year-old woman, Edna Awuor Otieno, who claimed to have a “love child” for the late Kenyan world marathon record holder, Kelvin Kiptum, has opened up on the alleged secret affair that led to the birth of a baby girl who is now aged one year and seven months.

Otieno had tried to stop the burial of the star athlete by asking that her child should be recognized by the Kiptum family, saying she was ready for a DNA test. But a Kenyan high court had thrown out her application and ordered that that the burial should go on.

Otieno, who claimed she had a secret affair with Kiptum that spanned over two years, made a stunning revelation in an interview on Tuesday, giving details of her affair with Kiptum, including candid interactions with Kiptum’s wife and the dynamics of their unconventional relationship setup.

According to the interview with a popular Kenyan online news platform, Otieno’s narrative paints a picture of a relationship that began in 2019, while Kiptum was already married.

“Despite being fully aware of his marital status, Awuor embarked on a romantic relationship with the athlete,” the platform wrote.

“She describes a routine where Kiptum would spend the majority of his weekdays with her, only returning to his wife’s residence during nights or weekends.

“This arrangement, according to Awuor, was not hidden from Kiptum’s wife, Asenath, who was initially furious upon discovering the affair.

“Contrary to what many might expect, the relationship was dynamic between Awuor, Kiptum, and his wife, and evolved over time. Awuor claims that after initial hostility, Asenath ceased her insults and seemingly accepted the situation.

“This acceptance extended to direct communications between Asenath and Awuor regarding Kiptum’s whereabouts.

“Furthermore, Awuor emphasized Kiptum’s dedication as a father, noting his continued support for their daughter until his untimely death.

“Following Kiptum’s death, Awuor has stepped into the public eye, not just to share her story but to also assert her daughter’s rights.

“The late marathoner’s legacy is now intertwined with legal considerations, as Awuor seeks to secure her daughter’s future.

“Edna Awuor’s account sheds light on the personal life of one of athletics’ stars, offering a reminder of the complexities that often lie behind public personas.

“As this story unfolds, it prompts a broader reflection on the nature of relationships, the responsibilities of those involved, and the impacts of their choices on the lives of others.

“While the legal proceedings will likely provide a formal resolution, the personal narratives involved tell a story of love, conflict, and eventual understanding that transcends legal boundaries.”

Kenya unveils ‘killer-squad’ for Paris Olympics marathon Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic

Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games kicking off in July, Kenya has unveiled a “killer-squad” for the marathon event.

The six-man team, which was unveiled by Athletics Kenya on Wednesday, is made up of three men and three women with one reserve each on either side, with defending champions, Eliud Kipchoge and Peres Jepchichir, as well as Hellen Obiri and Benson Kipruto leading the pack.

Others named in the final Kenyan Olympics team include London Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso and Tokyo Marathon winner Benson Kipruto while Timothy Kiplagat, who finished second in Tokyo, will be on standby incase any of the selected three cannot make it.

With the final team list, Jepchirchir will get a chance to defend her title as she heads to Paris in good form after winning the London Marathon in a new women’s-only world record last month.

Jepchirchir will be joined by Obiri who defended her Boston Marathon title last month, while Brigid Kosgei made the final three despite finishing fifth in London last month.

According to sports analysts, Kosgei’s experience seems to have convinced the panel of selectors given that she won silver behind Jepchirchir at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, edging ahead of Sharon Lokedi, who finished second in Boston.

Lokedi will therefore be on standby as the reserve in case any of Obiri, Jepchirchir and Kosgei fail to make it to Paris.
