Top five most valuable African strikers in 2023

The year 2023 has been one of the most productive in terms of outstanding performances from African football stars, with many of them hugging the headlines in their respective European club sides.

The year saw Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen. breaking all sorts of records in the Italian Serie A, and ended up as the first African to win the highest goal award with his 26 goals, leading Napoli to its first Scudetto in 33 years.

Several other African players also pulled up spectacular performances which shot their stocks high and placed them at par with their European counterparts.

Egyptian captain and Liverpool winger, Mohamed Salah, Brentford’s Cameroonian striker, Bryan Mbeumo, Bayer Leverkusen’s Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface, and Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forests gall fall into this category.

The year also saw some outstanding performances from African strikers which further highlighted the continent’s growing influence in the global football market.

Their performances also set them apart as some of the most valuable and impactful players in the world of football.

1. Victor Osimhen – Nigeria (€120 million)

Victor Osimhen, the current African Footballer of the Year is the most valuable African striker with a price tag of €120 million, which could rise to €130 million when he signs a new contract extension in the coming days.

The 24-year-old Nigerian sensation saw his stock rise astronomically after leading Napoli to its first league title in over three decades.

Osimhen is now the most sought-after striker in world football with top European clubs like Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Chelsea angling to get him in the next transfer window.

Mohamed Salah – Egypt (€65 million)

The Egyptian captain is considered one of the greatest African players has continued to excel at Liverpool with scintillating performances every other week. With 14 goals so far this season, Salah’s value has continued to rise, seeing him take second spot on our list of most valuable African striker in 2023.

Victor Boniface – Nigeria (€40 million)

From practical obscurity to superstardom, Victor Boniface has plummeted his stock to become one of the most valuable striker on the continent.

The Bayer Leverkusen star has had a sensational season, scoring 14 goals in 21 games and is part of a growing list of Nigerian players making significant impacts in European football.

Bryan Mbeumo – Cameroon (€35 million)

Cameroonian and Brentford striker, comes in at fourth position on the list of the most valuable strikers from Africa.

The 24-year-old forward has so far scored seven goals in the EPL this season with his performances ear-marking him for greater heights.

Taiwo Awoniyi – Nigeria (€30 million)

Another Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who plies his trade with Nottingham Forest in the EPL is valued at 30 million after an impressive first where his goals helped his team stay in the Premier League.

Al Ahly, Esperance to clash in CAF Champions League final

Two of Africa’s club giants, Egypt’s Al Ahly and Esperance of Tunisia, will do battle next month over two legs for the right to be crowned champions of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

Title-holders Al Ahly and their long-standing rivals Esperance both booked their places in the final with dramatic semi-final victories over DR Congo”s TP Mazembe and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa respectively on Friday night.

While Al Ahly, winners of five of the last seven editions of the continent’s top draw tournament, with a record 11 in total, overcame TP Mazembe with a 3-0 aggregate victory in the semi-final second leg after a goalless first leg last Saturday, Esperance surprised Sundowns with a 1-0 victory in Pretoria to wrap up a 2-0 aggregate win.

The two-legged final will mark the third encounter between Ahly and Esperance in the Champions League final, with the Egyptians winning in 2012 and the Tunisians triumphing in 2018.

In 2023, the two clubs clashed in the semi-finals with Ahly emerging victorious home and away, securing a 4-0 aggregate triumph.

Esperance who are aiming for a fifth Champions League title, will host the first leg in Rades on May 18, with the return fixture scheduled in Cairo seven days later.

Former Zambian captain Rainford Kalaba discharged from hospital after near-fatal accident

Former Zambian national team captain, Rainford Kalaba, has been discharged from hospital weeks after he was involved in a near-fatal accident where he sustained serious injuries.

The accident which involved a head-on collision between a Mercedes-Benz car in which Kalaba was in, and a truck, had initially sparked fears for his life and has since been in the Intensive Care Unit of the Zambian University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

The good news on the footballer’s progress was released by the UTH Public Relations Officer, Nzeba Chanda, who informed that the Chipolopolo legend has been discharged after showing positive signs of recovery.

“Mr. Rainford Kalaba has been discharged from the UTH-Adult where he was admitted after being involved in a road traffic accident two weeks ago,” Chanda said, adding that Kalaba will continue his recovery at his family home.

According to local media reports, the 37-year-old was a passenger in a Mercedes Benz when it collided with an oncoming truck in the south-eastern Zambian town of Kafue a week and five days ago.

In his active playing days, Kalaba spent the majority of his club career at TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, winning the CAF Champions League with the club in 2015 and the CAF Confederation Cup in 2016.

He also had a spell with clubsides in Portugal including FC Braga, and was a major part of the Zambian squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012 under Frenchman, Herve Renard.
