Video: Kenya to make $300m eurobond payment next month as it moves to ease concerns

Published

on

In this video, Kenyan President William Ruto says Kenya will make a $300 million payment in December towards the $2 billion Eurobond maturing in June 2024.

Investors have been concerned about the bond’s maturity because the refinancing option was out of reach due to an increase in yields, but Ruto has doused tension by now reiterating the government’s commitment towards repayment, beginning next month.

Kenya is one of the nations in Africa struggling with debt. The nation is currently having financial difficulties as a result of having to devote almost half of its income to paying off debt.

Video: Aviation Minister, Keyamo faults ‘suspicious’ deals with Ethiopian Airlines over Nigeria Air project

In this video, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, lamented “suspicious deals” the Nigerian government, under former minister Hadi Sirka, had with Ethiopian Airlines for a Nigerian national air carrier project— Nigeria Air.

The deal, which was first announced in July 2018, includes tax waivers for five years. This was faulted by Keyamo.

He said: “Now we have looked at all the issues, and it’s before Mr President. But let me just give you one or two snippets because Nigerians are quick to judge.

“In the agreement, you are giving tax waivers to Ethiopian Airlines coming into Nigeria; they ask for tax waivers for five years, and you grant them to come and compete with your local airlines who are paying those heavy taxes, how? You want to create a monopoly?”
