The ruling party in Zambia, United Party for National Development (UPND), has warned former President Edgar Lungu to reconsider his decision to return to active politics.
The Lusaka Province chapter which gave the warning on Tuesday through its Chairperson, Obvious Mwaliteta, said the former president should be ready to account for his actions while in government as he would be treated as an ordinary citizen.
Mwaliteta, who reacted to Lungu’s announcement on October 28 of his intentions to come back into active politics, said for now, Lungu had lost his immunity through his return to active politics and should be ready to face the law for any offences he committed when he was the country’s leader.
In a statement he issued in Lusaka, Mwaliteta said:
“We know that Lungu wants to attract the international community’s attention to destroy the gains that has been achieved by the new dawn administration.
“Zambia prides in Lungu as the only surviving former Head of State after Kenneth Kaunda, Fredrick Chiluba, Levy Mwanawasa, Rupiah Banda and Micheal Sata.
“It must be noted that as the ruling party intend to fight the Sixth Republic President but it is obvious that he will encounter a number of challenges with the removal of most benefits that he enjoys as former president”.
Mwaliteta adds that once Lungu returns to the political scene, the ruling party would be left with no option but to rethink the privileges that he enjoys as an ordinary citizen including the withdrawal of certain privileges including his state security.
