Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag has thrown his weight behind his Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana, after the goal tender put up another horror show in their 3-2 loss against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
Ten Hag, who quickly came to the defence of Onana after the match, indicated that he would not drop the goalkeeper after his latest blunder in the match which was marred by his now characteristic blunder.
Onana’s nightmarish start to life at Man United was once again criticized by supporters on social media after the game, particularly for his involvement in Casemiro being sent off in the tie.
With the game tied at 2-2, a lackluster pass by Onana was intercepted by Dries Mertens on the edge of the penalty area, prompting Casemiro to foul the Galatasaray player inside the box which led to the midfielder’s sending off and a penalty against the home side.
But despite a string of errors which have seen United suffer two home defeats on the trot while recording six losses in 10 games in all competitions so far, ten Hag still believes the keeper will come good.
“We are happy with our goalkeeping group, definitely with Andre, and Andre was in one semi-finals of the Champions League, last season he was in a final of the Champions League, he has the capabilities to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” the coach said after the match.
“He showed that and he will do. We have already seen in games his great capabilities, also his personality after he made a mistake. He will bounce back and I’m sure he will do in the coming games as well.”
