A fake Kenyan lawyer, who won all of the 26 cases he handled, has been arrested after his cover was blown.
The fake lawyer identified as Brian Mwenda, who was found to never have had any legal education, reportedly won 26 cases while parading himself as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
Mwenda reportedly handled and won 26 cases before High Court Judges, Magistrates, and Court of Appeal Judges, until he was arrested.
The fake lawyer was arrested by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Nairobi Branch Rapid Action Team (RAT) after a report was lodged by concerned practitioners and complaints from the public.
The LSK, in a post on its X handle announcing the arrest of Mwenda, said he was not a registered advocate and did not have a licence to practice law in Kenya.
“It has been brought to the attention of the LSK Nairobi Branch through the Rapid Action Team (RAT), that the man has been presenting and conducting himself as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a member of LSK Nairobi Branch,” the LSK said.
“He has been arrested and is being held at the RAT headquarters pending further investigation.”
According to the LSK, Mwenda was not a registered member of the society and had no legal qualifications.
“He had been presenting himself as a lawyer for three years and had handled 26 cases before High Court Judges, Magistrates, and Court of Appeal Judges. He won all the 26 cases before his arrest,” the organisation said.
“The Branch wishes to notify all members of the society and of the public that BRIAN MWENDA NJAGI is not an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, from the Society’s records, neither is he a member of the Branch.
“The LSK urges anyone who had been defrauded by Mwenda or had any information about his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or contact the LSK RAT team.”
Mwenda was arrested on October 13 by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He is expected to face charges of impersonation, forgery, and obtaining money by false pretences.
