Troubled East African country, Somalia has continued its push to join East African Community (EAC), in the attempt to strengthen relations with its neighbours.
Somalia President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is expected in Arusha on Thursday as a special guest to attend the 21st Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State. And Villa Somalia, his official residence, said his trip would also be about renewing his push to join the regional bloc.
The office of the presidency on Wednesday, said “president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is leaving tomorrow (Thursday) for Arusha in Tanzania to seek support for to join the East African Community (EAC), which, if possible, will benefit the Somali people.
The East African Community (EAC) rejected a bid by Somalia to join the organization shortly after South Sudan’s membership was approved in 2016, saying that the country was unable to meet the organization’s membership requirement as a result of insecurity.
The EAC is a regional intergovernmental organization of six (6) Partner States, comprising Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. The body has seven organs The Summit, The Council of Ministers, The Co-ordinating Committee, Sectoral Committees, The East African Court of Justice, The East African Legislative Assembly, and The Secretariat.
With its security challenge amidst the war with terrorism, Somalia stands to gain extra military effort as the EAC is notable for deploying its forces to assist in troubled member states as it recently did with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Will Somali be lucky this time?
