Hundreds of Congolese on Monday took to the streets of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to stage an anti-Rwanda protest over allegations that the Kigali government is secretly giving support to the M23 rebels as tensions between the two neighbours continue to escalate.
During the demonstration, protesters carrying different placards, also called for the expulsion of the Rwandan Ambassador to the DRC as well as taking decisive actions against Kigali.
The DRC protesters who brandished nationalistic slogans on the placards, such as “Congo is our country … not a single centimetre will go to Rwanda,”also told their government never to cede any part of the country to Rwanda.
Tensions between the two countries have been building up with accusations and counter accusations coming from both countries.
While the DRC government has continued to allege that Rwanda is backing the M23, a primarily Congolese Tutsi group, after clashes between the M23 rebels and the Congolese army broke out last week in the North Kivu province, which borders Rwanda, Kigali has also accused Kinshasa of kidnapping its soldiers.
Last Saturday, the DRC government went a step further by banning flights by RwandAir from coming into its territory and summoned Kigali’s ambassador to explain the role of its country in the crisis, while RwandAir swiftly announced it was cancelling flights to the DRC.
The Rwanda Defence Force later said two of its soldiers had been kidnapped on patrol and were being held by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, another rebel group active in eastern DRC.
Relations between the two countries have been strained since the mass arrival in the eastern DRC of Rwandan Hutus accused of slaughtering Tutsis during the 1994 Rwanda genocide.p
