A former minister who served under Zimbabwe’s ex president Robert Mugabe was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to four years in jail on Friday. The conviction is unique as it is the first to hit a Mugabe-era official since the emergence of coup leader, and now president, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mugabe resigned in November after 37 years in power following a military coup. His former deputy, Mnangagwa, took power, vowing to root out corruption in a bid to attract investors to an economy crippled by a decade of hyperinflation and a sharp shortage of foreign currency.

Samuel Undenge, an energy minister in Mugabe’s cabinet, was accused of issuing a $12,650 contract without due tender to a company that did no work.

His lawyer Alex Muchadehama told Reuters that he would appeal the court’s decision, saying the sentence was “shocking”.

While Undenge’s next move is awaited, Mnangagwa may have served early notice that he means the battle against corruption. The courts in Zimbabwe are bracing up to deal with allegations against former foreign minister Walter Mzembi charged with “criminal abuse of office”, and former finance minister Ignatius Chombo who has been accused of trying to defraud the central bank over a decade ago.

They both deny wrongdoing.

The southern African nation chooses a new president and members of
parliament on July 30 in what is expected to be a close race between Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Critics of the Mnangagwa’s administration see him as an opportunist whose claims to anti-corruption war are purely cosmetic and intended to hoodwink Zimbabweans into hanging on on to power.

Despite initial teething problems and the harrowing hardship Nigerians are going through, President Bola Armed Tinubu has restated his commitment and desire to deliver effective leadership and governance to citizens.

Tinubu, who made the vow during the graduation ceremony of the Senior Executive Course (SEC) 45 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) at Kuru in Jos, Plateau State, on Saturday, said as a responsible and responsive leader, his main desire was to ensure that Nigerians got to enjoy the dividends of democracy and good governance.

The president, who was represented by Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, stated that he had not only heard the cries of Nigerians, but that he had also taken it upon himself to lead in a responsible manner.

“As a responsible or responsive government, it is our burning desire to provide good governance at both national and sub-national level, as encapsulated in our Renewed Hope Agenda,” Tinubu said.

“Though Nigeria is going through several challenges at the moment, the challenges are not insurmountable.

“I, therefore, wish to remind the National Institute that so much has gone into training. These include confidence finance, and effort from the faculty and yourselves.

“Please, do not let the nation down as much as expected from you as you return to serve the nation through your various offices.

“Congratulations for producing excellent and workable recommendations. The government buys into your mission towards a better society as is ever willing or ready to support you in achieving it for our nation and people.

“I use this special moment to urge you to continue in this trend, as our government is ready to give you all the necessary support to achieve on your mandate.

President Hichilema warns Zambian procurement officials against corruption in handling govt contracts

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has warned procurement officers handling government contracts against engaging in corrupt practices while carrying out their duties.

Hichilema, who gave the stern warning in Lusaka on Saturday during the commemoration of the 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day, declared that he had given security operatives the go ahead to bring any corrupt official to book and ensure that adequate punitive action was taken against them.

Hichilema, who was represented at the event by the Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu, added that his government’s fight against corruption had been “methodical and professional, making corruption an unattractive endeavour for those who may wish to engage in it.”

“We are resolute in eradicating corruption from the civil service, public procurement system, government contract awards, and all sectors of our economy to ensure Zambia’s prosperity,” he said.

The president also urged citizens not to be afraid to report suspected misconduct in the management and distribution of resources to law enforcement agencies.

He further noted that his administration had taken a proactive stance on reviewing the National Anti-Corruption Policy that would offer national guidance on strategies and programmes to combat corruption effectively.

“We are working diligently to involve various sectors of society, ensuring that the fight against corruption is inclusive, with all citizens informed of their role and empowered to contribute to the struggle,” Hichilema said.

He added that the government had granted the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) the authority to expand its operational presence in Zambia, and that the commission had spread its operations to 12 additional districts in Zambia.
