Phoenix Beverages Limited (PBL), a company incorporated in Mauritius, has been granted permission to purchase a 28.15% stake in a local company that produces alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) declared on Thursday that PBL was now able to purchase the minority interest in Africa Originals Limited, the company incorporated in England and Wales and the owner of Savannah Brands Company. The deal’s value has not been disclosed to the public.
“This approval has been granted on the finding that the transaction is unlikely to negatively impact competition in the market for manufacture, processing, distribution and sale of alcoholic ciders, alcoholic spirits and non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverages,” said the CAK.
Kenyan Originals (KO) Alcoholic Fruit Cider, Kenyan Originals Gin, and Kenyan Originals Iced Tea and Tonic are among the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages that Savannah Brands produces, processes, distributes, and sells.
In addition, PBL produces and distributes both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. IBL Group, the parent company of PBL, owns many companies in Kenya, including Naivas Limited.
Upon closing the deal, PBL will also receive minority controlling rights over many areas, including senior executive appointments, annual business plans, and budgets.
As a PBL affiliate, Naivas Limited is vertically integrated because Savannah Brands provides products to the supermarket chain.
