Former Zambian President, Edgar Lungu, has broken his silence over the state of affairs in the country, alleging that all government institutions had been compromised.
He also reacted against the backdrop of what he says has been the undue harassment he and his family members have been facing in the hands of the government and its agencies through “unnecessary court cases.”
Lungu, who recently came out of political retirement to become the leader of the opposition Patriotic Front (PF), declared that he was ready to face prosecution, and challenged the government to remove his immunity through Parliament so that he could face prosecution for any perceived crimes committed during his time in office.
The former president, who addressed a press conference in Lusaka on Friday, said he was coming back to full-time politics to enable him defend the country’s democracy which, according to him, had diminished under theruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
“I want to assure you that I will not remain silent for as long as injustice and an attack on democracy continue under the current government,” Lungu said.
He further noted that no opposition political party and its leader was safe as it could be seen from the interference in their internal affairs.
“Several opposition leaders have been arrested on trumped-up charges in order to silence them and are appearing in the courts of law. The interference can be seen from how they followed Harry Kalaba, Democratic Party, and now they have followed him to the Citizens First, Saboi Imboela’s National Democratic Congress has not been spared.”
Lungu insisted that he came back to active politics in order to save the PF from being “stolen and destroyed by the UPND using stooges,” vowing that his party would use all available means such as “civil, political, and lawful options to fight the UPND from destroying Zambia’s democracy and if this fails, then God would help the country.”
He also alleged that the President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration wanted to kill democracy and subsequently introduce dictatorship in order to prolong its stay in power.
“All institutions of governance are heavily compromised, I want to repeat that all institutions of governance are highly compromised, you can not even talk about the Police, Registrar of Society, Judiciary, its a question of degree,” Lungu said.
