Qatar 2022: African champions Senegal bundled out of World Cup by England

It was the end of the road for African champions, Senegal, as they were easily swept aside by a devastating England team who beat them 3-0 in the round of 16 on Saturday.

The Teranga Lions looked lost and uncoordinated for most part of the match and could not cope with the game plan of Gareth Southgate’s men as goals from Jordan Henderson. Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka put paid to the dreams of Senegal making it to the quarter finals.

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse had opted to go against his trusted 4-3-3 formation, rather settling for a more defensive 4-4-2 in an effort to contain England but it backfired after holding on for about 30 minutes.

The first goal came through Henderson who was set up by Jude Bellingham in the 38th minute. The Three Lions doubled their advantage with a few minutes of the first half remaining when Kane shot past Edouard Mendy after he was set up again by Bellingham.

Nigerian-born Saka put the game beyond the West Africans in the 58th minute when he dinked over Mendy after Foden found him in space in the box.

Senegal struggled to get a footing throughout the match, and had a spell of 20 minutes when they should have gone ahead but with Dia missing from close range but apart from those frenetic moments, it was a one-way traffic for England.
