Too Good, Too Bad: How African stars performed in Europe last weekend

Published

on

The last weekend was not really a good one for African players especially in the English Premier League as a handful of them ended up disappointed with the end results.

While a few who put up good individual performances worthy of mention, some others did not live up to expectations.

Egypt captain and Liverpool talismanic striker, Mohamed Salah was again disappointed as he was frustrated by Everton which had Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi in the mix as one of English football’s oldest derbies ended in a stalemate.

On Sunday, Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka brought the African flavour as they both scored in Leicester City’s ill fated trip to Brighton and Hove Albion as they were hammered 5-2.

But it was a different ball game in the Dutch Eredivisie as Ghanaian striker,
Mohamed Kudus and Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey were in good form as Ajax hit Cambuur 4-0.

Africannewswatch brings you review of some of the good and the bad of African players in Europe last weekend.

Too Good

Kelechi Iheanacho – Leicester City

Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho scored the fastest goal in the English Premier League so far this season as he netted Leicester City’s first goal barely in the first minute against Brighton.

He should have added a second minutes later but his close range shot flew inches wide. But despite his all round contribution, Brendan Rodgers’ charges were humiliated 5-2 to prop up the bottom of the table in the six weeks old EPL.

Patson Daka – Leicester City

Zambian striker Parson Daka was also on song in Leicester’s 5-2 defeat to Brighton but the forward will be happy with his all round performance in the game.

He provided the assist for Iheanacho first minute goal and was on target himself with the Foxes’ second goal in the 33rd minute before the squad capitulated from a combination of poor defending and school boys error.

Mohamed Kudus – Ajax

The Ghanaian striker scored one of Ajax’s goals after coming on for compatriot Brian Brobbey in the second half.

Kudus got on the scoresheet in the 64th minute off a sublime assist from Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey who was also in spectacular form throughout the match.

Nicolas Jackson – Villareal

Senegal international, Nicolas Jackson is slowly becoming an integral part of Villarreal as he once again provided an assist for Giovani Lo Celso to double the scores as Villareal tore apart Elche in a one sided La Liga match that ended 4-0.

The attacking midfielder had one shot on target, one key pass, 20 touches, one dribble, seven passes and a passing accuracy of 85.7% helping Villarreal maintained an unbeaten run in the league so far.

Too Bad

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Mohamed Salah’s struggles continued at Goodison Park as a dogged Everton held Liverpool to a goalless draw.

The Egyptian captain’s disappointing struggles also epitomizes The Reds uninspiring start to the season where they have found the going tough, amassing only seven points in the six weeks old EPL.

The stalemate also saw Salah’s goal drought continued as he failed to found the back of the net despite playing the whole 90 minutes.

He managed three shots, one shot on target, made three key passes, with a passing accuracy of just 65.4%.

Wilfred Ndidi – Leicester City

Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi had a match to forget as he gave away a soft penalty and was at fault for another goal as Brighton ran riot against the Foxes.

Ndidi can be forgiven as he was played at centre back away from his defensive holding role by Brendan Rodgers but he still had a stinker of a game that did not do his usual high rating any good.

Edouard Mendy – Chelsea

Senegal Afcon winner once again makes the too bad list after his below par performance against West Ham which was epitomised by his dreadful feigned injury which has remained a talking point.

Mendy has come in for strong criticism this season as he yet again failed to keep a clean sheet in the narrow 2-1 victory over the Hammers.

His cause was not helped by the controversy he created which led to a VAR decision that cancelled what would have been the Hammers’ equaliser by Maxwel Cornet.

The mixed 4x400m relay team which had the quartet of Samuel Ogazi, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Chidi Okezie, and Esther Elo Joseph, picked the slot after finishing second behind the USA in their heat with a time of 3:13.79, to ensured Nigeria’s presence on the Olympic stage.

Both Nigeria and the US were a distance ahead of other in the heat and it was obvious as at the third leg that the race was between the two countries.

According to reports on the race, Okezie ran an impressive third leg in 44.78 to handover his baton first, but a US Olympics gold-medalist, Kendall Ellis, was too much for Esther Elo Joseph in the anchor leg as she led the United States to the finish line first.

Kenyan footballer arrested over brutal robbery, murder case

Published

on

A Kenyan footballer, Byron Billy Owuor, has been arrested in connection with a violent robbery that led to the murder of a businesswoman in the Kondele area of Kisumu County of the country.

Owuor, a former Kisumu All-Stars player, was arrested after an AK47 rifle linked to violent robbery and murder was recovered and linked to him.

According to media reports, the 26-year-old midfielder was arrested along with another suspect for their alleged roles in a crime that has shocked the local community.

Police authorities confirmed that they seized the AK47 and 36 rounds of live ammunition linked to the robbery which took place on January 27th.

In a statement by the country’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the weapon was used to fatally shoot the business woman, Grace Awino Adero, who operated an M-Pesa shop with her husband.

“The assailants attacked the couple, making off with the day’s earnings and killing Mrs. Adero, while her husband narrowly survived the encounter,” the DCI said.

“The cold-blooded killers, believed to be part of a larger gang, fled the scene on an unmarked motorcycle, retreating to a hideout in Kasagam.

“Hours later, a suspicious saloon car was located by the Kasagam police during a routine patrol. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered a homemade pistol and four mobile phones, alongside an AK47 rifle without its magazine.

“The investigation revealed that the rifle had been obtained illegally from Uganda,” the DCI noted.

A media report stated that the case took a significant turn when detectives identified Robert Wakolo Okoth, also known as Michael Osama, as the alleged mastermind behind the syndicate’s criminal activities.

“Following this lead, a coordinated sting operation was conducted at Osama’s residence near Rai Primary School in Kasagam. During the raid, Osama’s 17-year-old brother, also believed to be a gang member, was arrested.

“The items recovered from the house include an AK47 magazine loaded with ammunition, six rounds of .38 special ammunition typically used in pistols, and five ID cards from different individuals.

“A green camouflage bag and a Kenya Armed Forces Comrades Association card were also found, pointing to the serious nature of the gang’s operations.

“With the arraignment at the Winam Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court, detectives have been granted an additional 14 days to wrap up their investigation.

“The focus now turns to capturing the remaining gang members whose identities have been uncovered but remain at large,” the statement said.
