Amidst the growing challenges of the Russia/Ukraine war, the African Union (AU) Chair, Macky Sall said he has had “very reassured and very happy with our exchanges” with President Vladimir Putin of Russia.
Sall, who is also Senegal’s president, said his conversation with the Russian president regarding food shortages caused by fighting in Ukraine ended on a positive note.
The AU chief’s visit to Moscow is aimed at “freeing up stocks of cereals and fertilizers, the blockage of which particularly affects African countries”, along with easing the Ukraine conflict, Sall’s office said Thursday.
“I found Vladimir Putin committed and aware that the crisis and sanctions create serious problems for weak economies, such as African economies,” Sall told journalists after talks that lasted three hours.
Putin “told us with regard to Ukraine that there are several ways to facilitate exports” either through the Black Sea port of Odessa “which is difficult because Ukrainians have to clear mines” or via the Russia-controlled port of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov.
The Russia/Ukraine war has contributed to global food shortage with the two countries accounting for a significant amount of certain food supply globally, especially wheat.
The price of wheat has soared in Africa by over 45% since the war in Ukraine began. Fertilizer prices have gone up by 300%, and the continent faces a fertilizer shortage of 2 million metric tons.
