On Sunday, at the Medio Maraton de Valencia in Spain, Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia broke the men’s half marathon world record by finishing in 57 minutes and 30 seconds, just one second behind the previous record.
Since January 1, 2004, World Athletics, the worldwide governing body for athletics, has formally recognised the world record in the half marathon. Since then, six women’s world records and five men’s world records have been formally recognised.
Jacob Kiplimo of Kenya set that in Lisbon in 2021. Running just his sixth half marathon, 27-year-old Kejelcha initially trailed the pacemakers before gaining ground at the three-kilometre mark.
Kejelcha, the world indoor mile record holder, won the race in record time after separating from Kenyans Daniel Mateiko and Isaia Kipkoech.
Arturo Barrios became the first man to complete a half marathon in less than an hour on March 30, 1991, when he ran a world record 21.101 kilometres in an hour. At 59:47 on April 3, 1993, Moses Tanui became the first man to complete a half marathon race in less than an hour.
