Prosecutors in junta-led Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have accused French journalist and researcher, Wassim Nasr, of being an “apologist for terrorism” for his analysis of jihadist atrocities.
France 24’s security specialist, Nasr, routinely comments on the Islamist insurgency that began in Mali in 2012 and extended across West Africa’s Sahel area.
Following a rare Islamist attack on strategic sites in Mali’s capital, Bamako, on September 17, he conducted a detailed investigation, drawing global attention.
On Wednesday night, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger terrorism prosecutors delivered the same statement on national television.
Nasr was accused of promoting terrorist activities through statements, citing the current Bamako attack and the 2023 Djibo attack in Burkina Faso.
The statement stated Nasr is being investigated for criminal conspiracy, cooperation in terrorism, and terrorism apologies.
Meanwhile, the French-based journalist claimed he had no comments after media queries..
“A thought for Sahelian colleagues and for those who suffer the arbitrary nature of these regimes in flesh and blood,” he posted on X.
The Sahel insurgency is led by military governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, who took power in 2020 coups.
Since leaving ECOWAS and forming their tripartite alliance, their juntas have supported Russia above Western friends.
The governments have suspended France 24 and other international stations for insurgency coverage.
