The Zambian government has warned stakeholders in the betting and gambling sector against exposing minors to what it refers to as “irresponsible betting and exposing children to harmful practices.”
The warning was handed down by the Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Tourism, Evans Muhanga, who noted that with government “harnessing the potential of the industry to drive the expansion of the tourism sector, it was paramount to prioritise the well-being and safety of the citizens.”
Speaking at the official launch of Betway Zambia Customer Centre in Lusaka on Thursday, Muhanga said that collaborative efforts between the betting industry and relevant stakeholders were essential in establishing and enforcing responsible gambling protocols.
“This will ensure that individuals are safeguarded from potential harm and ensure the sustainability of the industry as a whole,” Muhanga stated.
He further noted that in recent years, Zambia had witnessed the emergence of the gambling and betting industry as dynamic force on the tourism landscape.
The Permanent Secretary said through the seamless integration of technology and entertainment, the industry had transcended its traditional boundaries to become a catalyst for innovation and growth within the tourism sector.
“The gambling and betting industry has been instrumental in driving this transformative journey forward,” he noted, adding that through “innovative platforms and expansive networks, the industry had not only enriched the entertainment landscape for visitors but had also amplified Zambia’s visibility as premier tourist destination on the global stage.”
Also speaking at the launch, Betway Zambia Chief Operations Officer, Travis Mulenga, said the company’s commitment to responsible betting practices remained unwavering.
“We are dedicated to either well-being and safety of our customers through rigorous responsible gaming protocols, educational initiatives and access to support services,” Mulenga assured.
