Nigerian sprint sensation and World Hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, made history on Wednesday after she successfully defended her 100m hurdles gold at the All African Games in Accra, Ghana, making it a third consecutive gold medal haul.
With that feat, Amusan became the undisputed queen of the tracks having won the last two editions in Congo Brazzaville and in Rabat, Morocco.
In the final race on Wednesday night, Amusan overcame a false start and a yellow card to sweep to her third gold medal, defeating Sidonie Fiadanantsoa who finished second and Zimbabwe’s Ashley Tinashe Kamangirirain who finished third.
The world record holder also anchored Nigeria’s 4x100m relay team to win gold to add to her long list of medals won at the African Games.
Speaking to sports journalists after the race, Amusan said:
“It’s been God. You know it was a hustle trying to get into the competition. I’m just happy to be here, defending my title once again.
“Putting one for the team, it’s an absolute pleasure. I got to represent my family, myself, and my country. I am just thankful,” she added.
The University of Texas graduate who had a long running battle with the World Athletics Federation last year following a violations ban that almost saw her lose her world title, added that she does not take to heart what people think about her.
“I really don’t care about what people think about me and I just come out here like I have always done to compete.
“Win or lose, I am still Tobi. And if you still don’t believe I am the world record holder, stick with it, it is not my problem,” she said.
