Former Cameroon international footballer, Geremi Njitap, has filed for a divorce from his wife of 16 years after a DNA test revealed that a set of twins he believed to be his are not his biological children.
In a heart-wrenching revelation that has sent shockwaves through the Cameroonian sports community, the former Indomitable Lions star took the step when he found out that the children actually belong to his wife, Laure’s ex-partner.
According to widespread reports in the country’s media, the “truth emerged after a paternity test which shattered Geremi Njitap’s long-held belief that the twins were his offspring.”
“Instead, they are the biological children of his wife’s previous husband. The weight of this revelation has left the former football icon grappling with a mix of emotions – betrayal, shock, and disbelief,” one platform wrote.
The reports also stated that the former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder has been “psychologically damaged” by the revelation as he had dotted so much on the twins whom he believed were his kids.
“Geremi decided to file for a divorce after a DNA test revealed that his children’s biological father was actually his wife’s ex-husband,” another sports platform wrote on the scandal.
“Geremi’s wife, Laure, had supposedly had an affair with her former spouse while she was with him. Until the DNA test, the former footballer believed the twin children to be his.
“The court documents detail that no children have been born from this union between Geremi and Laure. But the discovery that the children were from her previous partner destroyed the couple’s harmony through her abject behaviour. It caused him a huge emotional shock.”
The documents also said Laure claimed the twins who were born in June 2008, four years before the couple’s marriage, were his, which motivated them to get married.
“But the discovery that the children were from her previous partner destroyed the couple’s harmony. It caused him a huge emotional shock.”
Geremi, 45, who was a stalwart for Chelsea during his time, played 109 times between 2003 and 2007, scoring four goals.
He also played for Real Madrid between 1999 and 2003, winning La Liga and the Champions League twice with the Spanish giant.
