Six months after suspending its membership in reaction to a coup that deposed President Ali Bongo, the Economic Community of Central African States has decided to lift sanctions against Gabon and reintegrate it into the regional group.
Regis Onanga Ndiaye, the foreign minister of Gabon, stated in a late-night television speech on Saturday that the decision was made by member states during a conference in adjacent Equatorial Guinea.
Moments after the electoral body announced that ousted President Ai Bongo had won a third term in the presidential election, military officers under the command of General Brice Oligui Nguema took control of the country earlier this month.
Although the bloc did not release a statement, Burundi’s Foreign Minister Albert Shingiro, who attended the conference, said in a post on X that a resolution to suspend sanctions was achieved.
The bloc quickly suspended Gabon’s membership and all associated activities following the coup on August 30, declaring that these sanctions would stand until constitutional order was restored.
Central and West Africa have experienced military incursions in politics in recent years, emphasizing disturbing patterns in electoral democracies on the continent.
