President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the alleged N585 million fraud scandal currently rocking the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
The scandal blew open last week when it was revealed that the minister in charge of the ministry, Dr. Betta Edu, had directed the disbursement of the funds meant for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun and Lagos states into the UBA account of one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola.
The leaked document showed that Edu had requested the Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein, to transfer the grant into the private account of Mojisola, which is a breach of the Federal Government’s financial regulations.
With the public outcry that followed the revelations, Tinubu, on Sunday through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the setting up of a panel of inquiry to probe the fraud with a vow to “decisively punish” those involved in any breaches and infractions unravelled during the investigations.
Idris, who conveyed the president’s displeasure at the scandal, said the presidential directive was sequel to the widespread information circulating regarding payments made by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
In a statement he issued on Sunday evening, Idris said:
“In light of recent events, the President has directed that a thorough and comprehensive investigation be conducted to ascertain the accuracy and validity of the reported details.
“The government is determined to unravel the truth as it relates to this matter, and assures that appropriate action will be taken to ensure that any breaches and infractions are identified and decisively punished, in line with the administration’s commitment to public accountability and due process.
“The Ministry of Information and National Orientation acknowledged the concerns raised by the public regarding the alleged payment of funds into a private account by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
“We are aware of the narratives circulating widely and wish to assure Nigerians that the Government takes these issues most seriously.
“The public is advised to note, against the backdrop of various unverified narratives circulating on the Internet, that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, is the primary source for verified information about events and actions of the Federal Government of Nigeria, and only accurate details will be shared with the public.
“We urge Nigerians to exercise patience as the investigation unfolds. The government is focused on ensuring a fair and unbiased process, and the findings will be communicated duly and transparently to the public”.
