Algerian defender, Youcef Atal, has been handed an eight-month suspended prison for allegedly “inciting religious hatred” in a social media post in the wake of the conflict between Israel and Gaza.
A Nice Criminal Court in France, which gave the sentence on Wednesday, also ruled that Atal who plays for Nice in the French Ligue 1, must also pay a €45,000 (£38,886) fine for posting the antisemitic video on his Instagram account.
The 27-year-old who has been suspended by his club “until further notice,” was also mandated by the court to pay for details of his conviction to be published in regional daily, Nice-Matin, and national newspaper, Le Monde.
In December, the Algerian international was put on trial by French authorities on charges of inciting hatred after he reposted a video which showed a Palestinian preacher threatening Israel with a “black day”.
Atal had shared the video on his Instagram account which has 3.2 million followers, shortly after the attack by Hamas militants on Israel on October 7 in which 1,139 people were killed.
Following the video, his club quickly suspended him until further notice, while the professional football league banned him for seven matches.
Following a backlash, he quickly deleted the post and apologised the day after making the original post. In court hearings, said he did not watch the full 35-second video and had wanted to send “a message of peace”.
However, prosecutors said his argument did not convince the court.
“Sharing a video means being party to its message and lending it visibility,” lead prosecutor Meggi Choutia told the court.
“There is no talk of peace at any moment in these 35 seconds.”
