South African Amapiano star, Musa Appreciate Makamu, popularly known as Musa Keys, says he hopes to pick up a gong at the 66th Grammy Awards which will air on February 4, 2024 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, USA.
Keys, who spoke with entertainment journalists on Monday shortly after getting the news of his Grammy nomination, says he is confident of taking home an award.
However, he acknowledged that he was up against the best in the newly created Best African Music Performance with the likes of Nigeria’s Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, Davido, Wizkid and fellow South African, Tyla.
He was nominated in the category for Davido’s hit track “Unavailable” which he co-wrote and performed.
“I feel super great, amazing and I can’t wait to bring it back home,” Keys, himself a record producer, said.
The 23-year-old Musa Keys, who is the youngest male African nominee, shot to stardom in 2021 with his hit single, “Vula Mlomo”, which explored the practice of giving a gift to a bride’s father and the themes of love and vulnerability.
The single was certified double platinum by South Africa’s recording industry and since then, he has grown from strength to strength to become one of the best singers to come out of Africa.
On why he chose to do Ampiano-style music, Musa Keys points out that a lot of African artists are “doing this amapiano-infused music and that’s what’s making them really win”.
“Who would have thought that a sound from South Africa could help people outside the country to make it big out there?”, he says.
He went on to predict that “amapiano is going to be as big as afrobeats” and thinks the genre should get its own category at the Grammys.
“That’s something that I am personally fighting for,” he says.
