A former Zambian Minister of Foriegn Affairs, Chishimba Kambwili, will spend the next five months at the Milima Prison in Kasama District after being found guilty of hate speech.
Kambwili, a member of the opposition Patriotic Front (PF), was dragged before Kasama Resident Magistrate, Samson Mumba, in a case where he was charged with expressing hatred and ridicule of the people of Southern Province based on tribe and place of origin.
His sentence, according to Mumba, is with hard labour. He is expected to appeal both the ruling and the conditions.
Kambwili, 54, was first elected into Parliament to represent the Roan Province in 2006, and served until 2019 when he was accused of anti-party activities and being an office bearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP) by then Speaker of the National Assembly, Patrick Matibini.
After he was expelled from the PF, Kambwili formed the National Democratic Congress Party in 2019 with former Copperbelt Minister, Mwenya Musenge.
He later decamped and returned to the PF prior to the 2021 general elections where he vigorously campaigned for Lungu who lost to incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema.
He was first appointed as Minister of Foriegn Affairs and later moved to the Ministry of Sports and Youth, before he was appointed as Minister for Information and Publicity in 2015, and was reappointed in 2016 after President Edgar Lungu’s victory.
