Nigerian global star, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has set a new record in world music scene after his recently released song, “I Told Them” shot to top spot in the UK album charts a week after it dropped.
The new album, which was released on August 25, is currently tearing down global charts and is sixth in France.
With the feat, Burna Boy has become the first international Afrobeats artiste to secure a number one album in Britain, according to a statement by the UK’s Official Charts Company on Friday.
Before now, the Afrobeats sensation had come close to earning the accolade last year with “Love, Damini”, which climbed to second in the UK album rankings but this time around, he has achieved his long-term dream.
Reacting to the development on X on Friday night, Burna Boy wrote:
“I told them I’m the highest!! Number 1”.
While performing at a concert at a packed London Roundhouse, Burna Boy who took stage with his award, told the crowd:
“This right here, this means more to me than any of you can imagine because where I come from is a colony of this place. For me to be here today with the Number 1, that just tells you that anything is f***ing possible.
“So this right here is a big thank you to every one of you because you made this possible. Without you, none of this is happening.”
Burna Boy’s spectacular rise is also testament to the continued rise of the Afrobeats genre in Britain and around the world, as artistes like Rema, Wizkid and Davido are enjoying mainstream success on major streaming platforms, further increasing the popularity of the music genre.
Martin Talbot, the Chief Executive of the Official Charts Company, paid glowing tribute to the artiste in a post on the website of the platform:
“British music fans have always been renowned for their love of new music and embracing cultures from around the world, and the explosion of interest in Afrobeats’ musical culture over the past decade has been a concrete example of this. Burna Boy has shown he is the face of Afrobeats and is blazing the trail with this fantastic achievement.”
