The leader of the Russian mercenary group, Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin has been listed dead in a passenger plane crash north of Moscow, Russia on Wednesday.
According to Russian state media, the Federal Air Transport Agency has launched an investigation into the crash of an Embraer aircraft, which occurred in the Tver region north-east of Moscow on Wednesday.
“An investigation has been launched into the crash of the Embraer aircraft, which occurred tonight in the Tver region. According to the list of passengers, among them is the name and surname of Yevgeny Prigozhin,” the department noted.
Wagner has been an interested party in the security and counter-terrorism architecture of many African countries. According to reports, Wagner has operated in at least eight different African countries over the past ten years, including Mali, Libya, and Burkina Faso, among others.
But its operations in Africa have drawn criticism from Western powers, the most notable being an anti-terrorism operation in a Malian village, Moura last year, where the United Nations accused it of rights abuses and extra-judicial killings.
Last month, the United Kingdom announced sanctions on 13 persons and companies in the Central African Republic, Mali, and Sudan with links to Wagner.
Will the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, who recently led a failed mutiny on the Russian state affect Wagner’s operations in Africa? Time will tell.
