A plenary session of the Nigerian Senate turned rowdy on Monday afternoon during the ministerial screening of the country’s former Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo.
After his introduction to the legislators, Senator Darlington Nwokocha of the Labour Party raised a point of order that drew the attention of the Senate to some infractions by Keyamo against the Nigerian constitution and the institution of the legislature (Ninth Assembly) during his previous stint as minister.
The legislator described how the nominee prevented the legislative committee from performing its oversight duty over the N52 billion granted to his ministry and took a stand that his nomination be stepped down.
“I am of the opinion, so strongly that he has to tell us what really happened but not here. We have to keep it down a little bit, we are not saying that we are not going to clear him… I move a motion that we suspend forthwith this nomination and wait until this is cleared”
The motion led to a rowdy session as the voice votes for and against it were not clear enough to reach a decision by the Senate President. The confusion led the chamber to dissolve into an executive session.
During the break, the senate president was sighted at the Aso Rock Villa, Nigeria’s seat of power, where he was reported to have met the presidency in what is said to not be unconnected with the opposition to Keyamo’s screening.
The former minister was eventually screened after an apology to the lawmakers when plenary resumed over three hours later.
“I apologise to the Senate. I am sorry, I am sorry and I am sorry,” Keyamo said.
“Regarding that programme, the account was handled by the World Bank. So, we, the head of the agencies, never saw one kobo. We only generated the list and the money was paid directly to the people’s account.
“Every detail of that account was captured and kept in a file. All the records of the beneficiaries and their data are in the ministry.”
