Pressure has continued to mount on the South African government over it relations with Russia. The latest is a series of demonstrations calling for the arrest of Vladimir Putin during an expected visit.
A large number of billboards were sighted in major highways in the country all calling for the arrest of the Russian president whom the International Criminal Court had placed an arrest warrant on following the invasion of neighbours, Ukraine in February 2022.
The Billboards were reportedly sponsored by Avaaz, a US-based NGO. Some observers have noted that the NGO might be connected to the United States government which has been vocal against the Pretoria engagement with Russia.
Two weeks ago, United States ambassador, Reuben Brigety accused South Africa of providing ammunition to Russia by ship. Brigety said the US was sure that contrary to its public claim of being non-aligned in the Russia/Ukraine crisis, South Africa supplied arms to Vladimir Putin’s army in December.
Meanwhile, the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) on Tuesday revealed that it had begun legal proceedings to force the government to arrest the Russian President if he were to attend a planned summit in the country.
But another opposition group, the EFF movement agrees with the intention to host Putin. It’s leader, Julius Malema was recently quoted in the media as saying, “President Putin is welcomed, we know our friends, we know the people who liberated us, we know the people who supported us …”
South Africa will be hosting this year’s Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) bloc summit in August.
