The Moroccan Embassy in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, has raised the alarm over two of its cyclists, Abderrahmane Serhani and Driss Fatihi, who went missing near the Burkina Faso-Niger border for several days now.
The Embassy, in a statement on Friday, said it was mobilizing its resources and working in coordination with all relevant authorities to solve the case of the two Moroccan cyclists.
The statement said the Embassy was actively searching for the missing Moroccan bikers in close cooperation with the Burkinabe authorities to determine their location.
According to the Embassy, Serhani, a 65-year-old retired professor of Islamic education, and Fatihi, a 37-year-old shopkeeper, had left Morocco on January 19, and rode their bicycles across the Guerguerat border in the south of Morocco to Mauritania, and from there to other African countries.
“On March 29, one of the two cyclists posted a video on his Facebook page saying he was heading to Burkina Faso, a country plagued by violence since 2015 as a result of Al-Qaeda and Islamic State group attacks.
“Since then, the two men have not been heard from since they entered Burkina Faso from Côte d’Ivoire and headed across the border to Niger.
“The Moroccan Embassy in Burkina is in close coordination with the Burkinabe authorities to find the two cyclists,” the statement read.
