A prominent Egyptian lawyer, Mahmoud al-Semary, has filed a lawsuit against global streaming platform, Netflix for depicting Ancient Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra as a Black woman in an upcoming movie, “Queen Cleopatra”.
Al-Semary, who began the legal actions in a case filed on Thursday with the Egyptian Public Prosecutor, also called for the closure of the Netflix platform after the release of the trailer for the movie.
The lawyer said the film, which depicts the historical figure as a black-skinned woman, was a slap on the history of the North African country, citing the controversy and outrage the movie had caused in Egypt.
He argued that the depiction of the revered Queen Cleopatra as a Black woman was “historically inaccurate and offensive to the Egyptian people.”
In the suit, al-Semary demanded that all legal measures be taken against those responsible for the documentary and the management of the streaming platform for its participation in it.
“Most of what Netflix platform displays contradicts Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones,” the lawyer noted.
The lawsuit also stated that the documentary promotes Afrocentrism that is widely spread on social media, which have slogans and writings aimed at distorting and obliterating the Egyptian identity.
“In order to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity among Egyptians all over the world, we ask and seek you to take the necessary legal measures against this platform,” he told the Public Prosecutor.
“We also demand stopping broadcasts showing all works aimed at obliterating and distorting the Egyptian identity, through films aimed at falsifying and distorting history in Egypt,” he added.
