A Venezuelan diplomat, Dwight Sagaray, has been convicted by a Kenyan court after he was found guilty of a July 2012 murder af the Latin American country’s acting ambassador, Olga Fonseca, at her home in Nairobi.
Sagaray, who was the first secretary at the Venezuelan embassy at the time, was found guilty of killing of Fonseca by Judge Roselyn Korir, on Wednesday, alongside three Kenyan nationals who had been charged with different levels of complicity in a “common plan to carry out the murder.”
According to court records, the 57-year-old Fonseca was found strangled in her bedroom less than two weeks into her posting to Nairobi, following the departure of the previous ambassador after he was accused of sexual harassment by his domestic staff.
Sagaray, who was the head of the mission before the arrival of Fonseca, was said to have been angered by her presence since he had hoped to continue overseeing the embassy, the court heard.
While delivering her ruling, Justice Korir said Sagaray had intended to be the main beneficiary of the crime, adding there was evidence he had tried to interfere with Fonseca’s ability to take over as the head of the embassy before she was killed.
“From the evidence, it is clear that the first accused, Sagaray, resisted the taking over of the embassy by Ms Fonseca,” Korir said.
Sagaray and his co-accused will however, be sentenced at a later date, the judge added.
