State prosecutors in Kenya say they will lay a murder charge on a key suspect over the killing of a prominent LGBTQ activist, Edwin Chiloba, whose body was found dumped in a metal box on a roadside early this month.
The brutal murder of Chiloba, had drawn both local and international condemnation with calls for justice from rights groups in Kenya and abroad.
A week after the discovery of Chiloba’s body, one of his alleged lovers, Jacktone Odhiambo, a freelance photographer was arrested and was arraigned at the Rift Valley town in Eldoret along with four other suspects, who were freed after police said they were not linked to the killing.
“Following our investigation, we have established that four of the suspects are not linked to the murder. However, the first suspect, Jacktone Odhiambo, will be charged with murder,” state counsel Anthony Fedha told the court, told journalists.
Kenyan chief government pathologist, Johansen Oduor, had said during the investigations said that the 25-year-old Chiloba who also model and fashion designer, was smothered to death.
Oduor said during a post-mortem, a piece of denim had been tied around Chiloba’s mouth and nose and that socks had also been stuffed into his mouth.
His body was discovered about 40 kilometres (25 miles) outside Eldoret after it was reportedly dumped from a moving car.
