Morocco renews interest in hosting World Cup following Atlas Lions Qatar success

Published

on

Morocco has renewed its interest in hosting the FIFA World Cup in the future after the historic World Cup run of the Atlas Lions in Qatar, which has shot the North African country to an unenviable height as a football super power.

Morocco gained international credibility as a footballing nation when it became the first African team to reach the semi final of a World Cup and with the feat, the Moroccan government has renewed its renewing interest in hosting the 2030 World Cup, potentially alongside close neighbors Spain and Portugal, Head of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, said at a press briefing on Friday.

“We wanted this organization to be shared between the African continent and the European continent,” Lekjaa said.

“A shared Afro-European bid would help in showing the world that the relationship between Africa and Europe is not only the relationship of illegal immigration and the fight against it.

“The relationship between the two continents is one in which civilizations can meet and cultures meet,” he added.

Though there is no concrete proposal for the bid yet, if it materialises, it would be the first ever multi-continent World Cup.

And with Morocco’s proximity with Spain and Portugal, the world could again see the World Cup having three hosts with the 2026 edition set to be hosted in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
