Indomitable Lions of Cameroon goalkeeper, André Onana, has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 26.
Onana who was involved in a controversial bust up with coach Rigobert Song and Cameroonian FA President, Samuel Eto’o, which led to him leaving the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, announced his retirement on Friday, barely a week after the end of the Mundial.
The Inter Milan shot stopper fell out with Song over disagreement about his playing style and also accused Eto’o of meddling in the team’s affair at the tournament.
Following the outburst, Onana was temporarily suspended from the squad and dropped from Cameroon’s second match against Serbia, which made him to leave Qatar in anger.
Onana who announced his retirement in a social media post on Friday, said he decided to call it quit with the national team as his relationship with the coach has reached its lowest ebb.
“My story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end. Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any person or player,” he said.
“Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team and for our people who have always supported us no matter how difficult the moment was.
“My feelings will never change. My Cameroonian heart will continue to beat and wherever I go, I will always fight to lift the flag of Cameron as high as possible.
“I will continue to support as a fan, just as the more than 27 million Cameroonians do at every match. I can only thank all those who trusted me and believed that I could add and contribute to this team.”
