Published
2 years agoon
The past weekend was particularly a good one for a number of African players who shone like a million stars for their respective European clubsides.
Those who got the nod of their coaches to take to the field not only gave a good account of themselves, they were in among the goals with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey stealing the headlines in the English Premier League with a stunning goal as the Gunners spanked hapless Nottingham Forest 5-0.
In the Italian Serie A, Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen scored his first career hat-trick for Napoli walloped Sassuolo 4-0 while the duo of Senegal forward and Cameroon international, Sadio Mane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, were on the scoresheet as Bayern Munich thumped Mainz 05 6-2 at the Allianz Arena.
At the receiving end were the likes of Nigerian internationals Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis, who suffered at the hands of Arsenal while Egypt captain, Mohamed Salah who fell 1-2 at home in the hands of Leeds United.
Africannewswatch takes a look at the African players who stood out for their European clubsides over the past weekend.
Thomas Partey – Arsenal
When Ghanaian international midfielder Thomas Partey decides to get in among the goals, he scores spectacular ones as was witnessed with his scorcher which flew past Nottingham Forest’s goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, in Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Forest.
That was Partey’s second goal of the campaign in a matter of weeks, following his first in the North London derby success over Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the month.
Both of Partey’s Premier League goals last season have one thing in common as they were both netted from outside the box in what has slowly become his trademark.
Victor Osimhen – Napoli
Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen seems to be getting better every passing day and once again, showed he is made for the big stage with his first Serie A hat-trick in Napoli’s 4-0 hammering of Sassuolo.
Osimhen has not only shot up to the summit of the Italian league goalscoring standings, it also means that he has now scored in three successive Serie A games.
The Super Eagles starboy last had such a good run in 2020-21, when he scored in three games on the trot and has hit the back of the net in his last three domestic appearances this term.
Osimhen could match his scoring streak from his debut campaign if he scores in the Partenopei’s next Serie A outing with high-flying Atalanta.
Ademola Lookman – Atalanta
Super Eagles winger, Ademola Lookman was on the scoresheet as Atalanta returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win at Empoli with the Nigerian international finding the back of the net in La Dea’s fifth away victory this term.
The former Leipzig star has now netted more league goals than the four he scored for the German club while in 2020-21 and is now one goal from matching last season’s tally of six while on loan with Leicester City.
Sadio Mane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting – Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich’s African forwards contributed two goals and three assists as Julian Nagelsmann’s men pounded Mainz 6-2 at the Alianz Arena, with the result seeing them maintain second spot on the Bundesliga table behind surprise leaders, Union Berlin.
Senegal striker, Sadio Mane was involved in nine shot-creating actions, higher than his previous best of six, scoring one and creating two assists while Cameroon striker, Choupo-Moting, also scored and made one assist to take his tally to three goals and two assists in seven appearances which included three starts.
The Cameroon international is now a goal behind last season’s Bundesliga return and has matched three goals scored from his first season in Bavaria.
Olivier Ntcham – Swansea City
The Cameroonian striker, Olivier Ntcham came off the bench to help Swansea City pick up a point from a 1-1 draw against Bristol City.
Swansea were trailing City courtesy of Tommy Conway’s first-half goal and the Cameroonian scored late in the second half to ensure the sides shared the spoils.
It was his fourth goal of the season, with three of those having come from the bench against Blackpool, West Brom, and now Bristol City.

Former President of Moroccan club Raja sentenced to 3 years in prison

December 28, 2024The former President of Moroccan top club, Raja Casablanca, Mohamed Aouzal, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison after he was found guilty of fraud by a Casablanca Ain Sebaa Court of First Instance on Friday.
According to court documents, the case involved charges of breach of trust and issuing a bounced check in connection with his role in the insurance sector.
Other charges against Aouzal included financial misconduct, specifically breach of trust and issuing a check without sufficient funds.
The documents stated that the legal action against Aouzal stemmed from a lawsuit filed by an insurance company and was found guilty of owing the company nearly MAD 400 million (around $40 million) as the legal representative of an insurance brokerage firm.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court also imposed a fine of MAD 20 million (approximately $2 million) in favor of the plaintiff company.
Aouzal was arrested following investigations by Morocco’s National Judicial Police Brigade after which he was charged before the Public Prosecutor at the Ain Sebaa Court and was placed in custody at Oukacha Prison.
The lawsuit, according to Morocco World News, pointed to significant financial irregularities in Aouzal’s brokerage firm, alleging that it failed to meet its financial obligations and caused substantial losses for the insurance company.
“The trial began on December 10 after Aouzal’s initial court appearance. The court examined the evidence and heard extensive arguments before entering deliberations earlier this week.
“On Friday, the judge ruled in favor of the insurance company due to the significant monetary damages incurred,” the report said.

Dumping England for Nigeria the best decision of my life— Ademola Lookman
Published
3 weeks agoon
December 27, 2024Current African Men’s Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has attributed his rise in the football echelon to his decision to dump the English national team, The Three Lions, to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The Atalanta striker, who was named the African Player of the Year after a sterling 2024 season where he kept putting up superb performances for both club and country, credited the success of his career to his decision to snub England and commit to Nigeria.
“I think ever since I put on the Super Eagles jersey, it’s been fruitful,” Lookman said in an interview on SportyTV.
“We’ve been able to achieve a lot as a team and we’re still going as a team. But the camaraderie is something that’s very special within the squad.
“It is an incredible achievement and an incredible moment. It is special to join a list of many great players who have achieved a lot in the game. They are legends.
“There have been many special moments this year, and I can speak about a lot of good ones. But also the tough moments, like when you don’t feel like hitting the gym, but you push through and end up doing that session—it gives you more strength. Those difficult moments have given me that extra strength,” he said.
The Atalanta forward believes that his decision to represent Nigeria has contributed to a significant personal and professional growth, allowing him to continue thriving with the national team.
Before switching allegiance to play for the Super Eagles in 2022, Lookman had represented England at youth level, including winning the U-20 World Cup in 2017 but he had a stop-start career with stints at Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City, before he was shipped to Atalanta, initially on loan, before the move was made permanent.
But the turning point in Lookman’s career came when he decided to switch allegiance to Nigeria and has never looked back as everything he touched turned to gold.
The London-born Lookman made his Super Eagles debut in March 2022 against Ghana, and he has since described this moment as a turning point in his career.
He has scored eight goals and provided four assists and was the star man at the 2023 AFCON tournament where he netted three goals and registered one assist, and was named in the tournament team.
