The disturbing trend of building collapse has continued in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital as a three-storey building collapsed on Sonuga Street, Palm Avenue, in the Mushin area of the State.
A yet-to-be-identified person and a child have been rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building while officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have continued rescue operations.
Lagos Territorial Coordinator of NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the development, confirmed that “a three-storey building has collapsed at Oye Sonuga Street, opposite Oye Roundabout, Isolo road, Mushin. An adult and a child have been rescued. The search and rescue operation is ongoing.”
A senior official of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyinyolu who also visited the scene, said two female occupants were still missing.
“Further investigation revealed that the collapsed building was an adjoining building to another three-storey building.
“Two people who were trapped inside the building have been rescued and treated. We were informed that two females that are occupants of the building are still missing.
“However, there are visible cracks on the remaining standing building that needs urgent attention. The building has been cordoned off and evacuated. The operation is ongoing.” He said.
Building collapse is becoming a worrying trend lately in Nigeria, In May, two building collapses were recorded in Lagos, with 2 reportedly dead in the accident, while many were injured.
