Seven suspects including a 15-year-old, has been charged by the police in South Africa for the gang rape of eight models during a musical video shoot near a mine dump in Krugersdorp, a small town west of Johannesburg.
The suspects, all illegal migrant mine workers who were part of 84 earlier arrested over the sexual assault, appeared briefly before the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court for multiple counts of rape, aggravated robbery and contravention of the Immigration Act on Wednesday.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the seven suspects will again appear at the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwana who addressed a press conference on Wednesday, said the Authority had established a prima facie case against the suspects.
“There is a prima facie case against all the accused are charged with various counts of rape, sexual assault as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances.
“The charges relate to the incident that happened to the crew that was busy filming a music video here in the West Rand.
“Initially, the accused only faced a charge of being in the country illegally but have now face additional charges, including multiple counts of rape, sexual assault and robbery with aggravated circumstances.
“The seven suspects appeared briefly before the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court for multiple counts of rape, aggravated robbery and contravention of the Immigration Act on Wednesday.
“At least one of the seven is a minor. The accused are part of the 84 suspects arrested a day after the rape incident.
“An identity parade was held on Tuesday. The matter has been postponed to the 28th of September for further investigations.”
