Moroccan King, Mohammed VI, pardons 979 prisoners to celebrate Eid Al Adha

King Mohammed VI of Morocco on Saturday, granted state pardon to 979 prisoners on the eve of the Eid Al Adha which is being celebrated Sunday in the North African Kingdom.

The pardon was contained in a press release issued by the country’s Ministry of Justice which unveiled the list of the beneficiaries of the royal pardon.

According to the press statement, the list include prison inmates who were granted a pardon over their remaining jail terms, convicts who had their prison terms reduced and prisoners who saw their sentences commuted from life imprisonment to fixed jail terms.

Among the beneficiaries of the Royal pardon, were 11 inmates convicted on extremism and terrorism cases.

“These prisoners benefited from Royal clemency after they renounced all forms of extremism & terrorism, and voiced attachment to the sacred values of the Nation and national institutions,” the statement said, in reference to those convicted on terrorism charges.

“Three of these convicts benefited from Royal pardon over their remaining prison terms, 5 had their prison terms reduced and their fines annulled, 2 inmates had their prison terms shortened and one person had his prison sentence commuted from life imprisonment to fixed prison term.

“Some convicts benefited from the pardon over their imprisonment terms but their fines were maintained. Other convicts saw their fines canceled, while others benefited from both a pardon over their prison terms and fines,” the Royal statement added.

An inclusive society is crucial for a nation’s human and economic development in the modern era.

In this edition of Project Aliyense, we feature Paul Kunda, widely recognized as the face of sign language interpretation on national television, serving the deaf community.

Kunda, a dedicated sign language interpreter and educator with over four years of experience, sheds light on the significance of media freedom.

“As a sign language interpreter at Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) and a teacher by profession, I advocate for media freedom,” he said.

Kunda emphasised the importance of the Access to Information (ATI) Act, recently assented to by President Hakainde Hichilema, which empowered citizens to demand information freely.

He stressed the need for unhindered access to information to foster a civil and prosperous society.

Regarding digital rights, Kunda highlighted their critical role for the deaf community, given the transformative impact of digital platforms, especially when mainstream media access is limited.

“As a representative of the deaf community, I believe digital rights should be inclusive. Everyone, including persons with disabilities, should enjoy these rights through various devices to express themselves and participate in national discourse,” he asserted.

He also called for the recognition of sign language as the eighth national language, aligning with United Nations conventions that mandate sign language interpreters at all events to promote inclusivity.
