The government of South Africa has officially requested that the United Arab Emirates to extradite Rajesh and Atul Gupta, following their arrest in connection to corruption trial of ex-president Jacob Zuma.
South Africa’s justice minister, Ronald Lamola made the position known on Monday.
“We can confirm that the extradition request has been duly submitted to the United Arab Emirates’ central authority today,” Lamola told journalists.
The corruption trial of the former South African President, Jacob Zuma took new twist in June as two brothers from the wealthy Gupta family were arrested in the United Arab Emirates with relations with Zuma’s case.
The siblings, Atul and Rajesh Gupta who fled South Africa after a judicial commission began probing their involvement in corruption in 2018 are accused of using their close links with Mr. Zuma to win business contracts, influence high-profile government appointments, and misappropriate state funds.
The country’s National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi who did not give precise timeframe for the extradition hinted that it might take several months. She said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) viewed the submission of the extradition request as an important milestone in attempts to hold accountable perpetrators of corruption.
“What I want to assure the people of South Africa is that as the NPA we do not bring cases unless we ourselves are satisfied that it meets the standard of reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution,” she said.
Jacob Zuma is also accused of taking bribes from French defense group Thales. He is charged with 16 counts of fraud, corruption, and racketeering. Thales is also charged with bribery and money laundering.
