There has been another attack by armed men in Burkina Faso, this time in the town of Seytenga, near the border with Niger.
The attack reportedly happened on Saturday night, in what appears to be a reprisal for an attack on the gendarmerie brigade in the town on Thursday, June 9.
The last attack, which was carried out in the commune of Madjoari which left at least 50 civilians dead is the bloodiest since the one perpetrated nearly a year ago in Solhan, in the northeast, which killed 132 people.
Witnesses say armed men have allegedly been harassing people in Seytenga for several days.
According to the government spokesman, there have been no official figures on casualties, but several sources pointed to dozens of deaths. Government also said intervention units have been deployed to the area.
The spokesperson claimed the armed men attacked civilians without discrimination and systematically killed anyone they came across.
Terrorist activity in Burkina Faso has involved religious terrorism conducted by foreign-based organizations, although some activity occurs because of communal frustration over the lack of economic development. Recent attacks are concentrated in the Hauts-Bassins, Boucle du Mouhoun, Nord, Sahel, and East regions, along the border with Mali and Niger.
