Regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have handed over 6,500 tons of food to Burkina Faso to address the effect of continued terror which has left thousands displaced in the country.
The food items which are intended for the internally displaced fleeing the jihadist violence in the country were received on Friday.
The minister of Agriculture of Burkina Faso, Delwendé Innocent Kiba, revealed that the food supply is a form of loan which the troubled West African state must pay.
“We had asked for 10,000 tons, and the ECOWAS granted a loan of 6,579.5 tons of food. It should be noted that this loan will be entirely repaid. while also seeking solutions to issues related to the replenishment of our stocks at the national level and also, of course, working to implement means of resilience to be able to succeed in the upcoming campaigns and move towards food sovereignty”, Kiba explained.
Terrorist activity in Burkina Faso has involved religious terrorism conducted by foreign-based organizations, although some activity occurs because of communal frustration over the lack of economic development. Recent attacks are concentrated in the Hauts-Bassins, Boucle du Mouhoun, Nord, Sahel, and East regions, along the border with Mali and Niger.
The food supply initiative is done through the ECOWAS’s regional food security reserve, and with the support of the European Union.
