The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Nigeria, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na-Allah has confirmed that two professors of the institution have been sacked over sex for grades allegations.
The Vice-Chancellor made the confirmation on Monday in New York as reported where he is on a two–day visit to meet with the University of Abuja Alumni Association, USA chapter.
Prof. Na-Allah called on the alumni body to channel more support for the institution. He also stressed that” female students needed to be protected.”
“I have dismissed two professors since I became the vice-chancellor.”
“We cannot allow the lives of our students to be destroyed because most of the abuses destroy the lives of their victims.’’
The vice-chancellor said: ”it was sad to see some lecturers, who are supposed to be protecting the female students, become one of their problems.
“As I speak now, there are several investigations ongoing by a committee set up, addressing the problem,’’
Academic institutions in West Africa have increasingly been facing allegations of sexual harassment by lecturers. This type of abuse is said to be endemic, but it’s almost never proven. A documentary by the BBC in 2019 that went viral revealed the disturbing cases of lecturers making sexual advances to female students.
